Vacation Up North Day 2

Today we were able to sleep in. Which was great, except neither of us could sleep past 7:30am. So much for sleeping in really late.

So we got up and took our time getting ready. Then we went over to the Rock Ledge Grill (the on-site restaurant) for breakfast; we had a voucher for this place. It ended up being cheaper to get the breakfast package than to pay per night. Like last time the food was mediocre and the service horrible. They actually managed to burn Lyle's french toast and my fruit and nut granola had raisins as the "fruit" and no nuts but lots of chocolate chips....

Anyway, with that aside we packed up our bikes and drove down to Jay Cooke State Park. We never have spent much time at this park. We ended up taking our bikes out for maybe 15 minutes; it was extremely windy and the biking trail was in pretty poor shape. We gave up on a long bike ride and brought the bikes back to the car so that we could go on a hike. We did the hiking trail along the river and then up the bluffs. After about 2 hours of hiking we decided to go do something else.

We went to Best Buy in Duluth to check out how much their portable GPS units cost. Lyle looked up prices online on his phone and, as expected, the prices online were about the same as we could get at Best Buy with the 40% off coupon. So we decided to skip the GPS for now. We left Best Buy and drove to the New Scenic Cafe for lunch. Lunch there was very yummy. We had a maple sugared Fig Plate with Blue Cheese for an appetizer and then I had a tomato/mozzarella sandwich while Lyle had a burger. Like everywhere up here, service was pleasant but very slow. We kept reminding ourselves that we weren't really in a hurry to get anywhere so we should just relax. After lunch we decided to go back to the lodge to drop off our bikes.

I dumped out the puzzle and we started doing that. We ended up spending a couple hours on that and then realized since this is supposed to be the nicest day for weather that we should probably get another hike in. So we took off planning to go up to Temperance River State Park. We underestimated the time it would take to get there and realized that the sun was starting to set and we were only to Tettegouche State park. SO we pulled into Tettegouche and did the hike to the High Falls. It was getting dark by the time we got back to the car so we went back to the lodge. Once we got back we went to the main building and got some hot drinks and dessert to go. Then back to our lodge to work on the puzzle some more. I am not sure what we will do next. Maybe we will watch a movie tonight.

We did find out that we can check out GPS units at the main building for free. So maybe if it's not raining too bad tomorrow we will do some more geocaching at some of the more northern parks. We will see.
